Using Expedia to book flights..

I'm not sure if I have mentioned before to readers that I will be making a trip down to Albuquerque, New Mexico next March for an agricultural leadership program I was selected to attend.

I have to book my flights and have been holding off for a while now.. but with prices going up everyday, I thought I should work on getting these booked. When I first checked about a month ago when I found out I was going to the conference, the flights round trip were roughly $485- now they are $540.

I've thought about going to a travel agent but seeing as its an extra $50 that I can save, why not use Expedia?! When using Expedia, there are various airline companies to choose from, lots of different times to fly out/in at and various layover cities to choose from too. So I think I may book with Expedia. BUT, before I do, I wanted to check wtih readers to see if they have booked with Expedia before? Is is as "sound" as booking with a travel agent- will I show up for my flight in March and be told that my seat wasn't held for me or something? And if I to cancel/change my flights, are they as flexible?

Before I book in the next week or so, I want to  check with everyone to see if they had good/bad experiences with Expedia. Let me know either way so I can make a wise decision when/if I book with Expedia :)

I have not used Expedia but I always use Yahoo Travel. It shows you different options and they are flexible if you want to change.

I used Priceline once for a flight and they wouldn't let me change my flight, even though I was at the airport 4 hours early and there was an open seat on an exact flight.

I would check Expedia's terms and conditions.

My sister has used them successfully in the past, for flights and hotels. I prefer to book through Air Canada and get the aeroplan miles :-)

Expedia is reliable, nothing to worry about, your seat will be reserved. I always prefer to book directly off the airline's website, so one option is to do a search on Expedia, see which airline has the best flight time/cost and then go to that airline's website, search for the same details and book the flight. I like it better, because then you can get an e-mail from the airline to remind you to check in online in advance etc.(if you sign-in to book). And obviously nothing is more reliable than booking with the airline itself.
Why do you like booking through travel agents? They are very old school, in this day and age, they don't do any better than what you can find yourself online and they charge you to do it.

I've never had trouble with them! I very rarely use a travel agent. I prefer having more control over my travel. I don't think you need to worry about using them!

Hey stina,

I book with expedia for work so I get mad PC points back on my Mastercard and then work pays me back. Sweet deal. I've had no probs with Expedia. PS. I am a dummy for not applying to that leadership thing too. I was seriously considering it and didn't think I should take the extra time off work. Potentially we could have been going together :(

I always just book off of the airline's website. I compare the two and usually Expedia is more money, or exactly the same. When booking with the airline, I know I can just call and change things if they need to be changed - or get money back if the flight cost goes down.

Thanks for all your comments everyone! I am a bit torn as half of you said to use it as you have used it before and others just go directly to the airlines website?!

I definitely don't think I'll be booking through a travel agent but I'm undecided as to whether to book now through expedia or the airline website.... decision still undecided. I'll let you know what the outcome is...
