My Pink lamp problem..

As you can see in the picture below, there is a big fat elephant in our living room that we must fix. Can you see it? Do you notice it? How could you miss it? They are the most hideous things you've ever seen and they seriously do not match anything else in our living room.

We have a pink lamp problem people! And my question to you is, what do we do with them?

I know that I want to paint them and possibly get new lamp shades or try and paint the current pink lamp shades we have (if thats even possible) but I am totally unsure of what colour to paint the lamps, what colour to choose for the lamp shades, etc. That's where I was hoping to get readers help!

What colour would you suggest as lamp shades and painting the currently gold lamp holders? I envisioned painting the gold lamp holders a silver colour and painting a few black lines around them and then topping the lamps off with black lamp shades. But is that too dark? Maybe I should be choosing white or a lighter colour to help brighten up the room?

Any suggestions/feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated! I want to get these lamps down asap because they are such an eye sore and are ugly-fying our great living room.

White or off white lamp fixture base with a beige lamp shade --- any lighter shade of beige or camel colour taken from the carpet you have. You've got a lot of dark going on in the room. A few lighter throw pillows would make it look sharp as well. Its an easy fix with a new shade and spray paint.

Goodluck.

Maybe the paper with plant fibers in it for the lampshade - cream colored textured paper w/ brown plant bark bits. It'll make the light a soft glow, but the cream/brown will match your furniture/rug/pillows without clashing w/ your existing stuff with black borders and the tall lamps. Not sure what to paint the base . . . but def not red because it'll be too matchy match in a bad way.

Wow! The pink on the base is something else!! These remind me of the early nineties 'grey & rose' colour theme that I think was popular. I think it was anyway. My parent's bedroom is also this colour combination.

I was also going to suggest a brown, paper shade. If you can't find one, you can always recover one with plain brown paper a la Young House Love. When I read your post, I immediately thought of their video from last week. http://www.younghouselove.com/2010/10/this-pretty-much-made-our-year/

As for the base, what about a gold leaf or crackle metallic paint? Ignorehttp://www.brights-interiors.com/2453//product/Amber-Metallic-Lamp-and-Shade.asp
the pineapple, but something like this maybe, to 'antique' it. It would fit with the rest of the room great!

Great room, Christina! Is this at your place?

Thanks for all your awesome ideas everyone!! I hope to work on the lamps this weekend so I'll try and take your ideas and incorporate them in while I'm re-doing the lamps. The toughest part is deciding the colour scheme!

Jenn, yes this is at my place. Its our living room :)
